One other thing about oxygen not getting into the system if you dont add new coolant. There is no such thing as a closed cooling system. as an engine warms up the coolant expands untill it fills the radiator. When the engine cools off the coolant shrinks. To keep the contraction of the coolant from collapsing radiator hoses and tanks, every radiator cap has the little vent valve which allows air to replace the coolant as it shrinks. This allows fresh antifreeze destroying oxygen into the radiator every time the system cools off. Most newer machines have a coolant tank near the radiator which is connected to the radiator overflow/vent tube. The reason for this tank is not only to catch any overflow, but to make sure that what is sucked back into the radiator during cool down is not oxygen rich air but relativly cool oxygen free coolant. This is somewhat closer to the ideal closed system.
