Fix the choke by putting a weak spring on the rod pulling it to the no choke position. Every SH with a properly operating carb needs the choke for about 15 seconds (on a very cold day). There is a tiny spring and ball in the carb body at the choke shaft that is missing, or rusted/worn out. It holds the choke open when working correctly. If the smoke is usually when at idle, or going down a hill with the throttle shut, it could be from the valve guides. I would throw a set of umbrella or PC style valve stem seals on it to see if it is better. If it is loosing coolant, that is the real answer, and needs further investigation. The valve seals can be installed without removing the head. JimN
