I've probably got what some might call a radio "museum" here. Well over 50 radios, wire recorders/players, wax cylinder recorders/players, etc. new and old, dating back to the 1920s. So, yeah . . . I know how crappy most new radios are in regard to AM reception. My old tube-powered Crosly or Halicrafters pull in much more than my newer stuff. I did got out and buy a new radio supposedly special made with enhanced AM reception in mind- the GE "Super Radio." Well, it's super-worthless. Also bought a new Grundig and it is just as useless.
I don't have any digital converter boxes laying around for TV, and I've tried al the radios that I've been using around here for many years. The AM signal just about disappeared since the TV-digital changeover day. I sent several emails to the engineering staff at WGY 810 AM radio in Alban (one that I lost). They're flooded with complaints with signal losses; i.e. it's not just me. They say they working on making some sort of tower changes and hope to fix the problem. The AM usuallys starts to come in, every night around 8:00 PM. And ,when I get up in the morning, it's gone.
