I used 1-1/2 inch angle iron 1/4 inch thick with a half inch bolt each way, but I used 2x5 oak for the cross pieces, not 4x4's, and the stringers are 3x7 oak. the size and thickness of the angle iron was probably overkill, but it's what was available at the time. You could probably be fine with 1 inch angle 3/16's thick. Another consideration might be to use two 3/8 inch bolts through the stringers instead of one 1/2 inch bolt. My cross members are 3 feet on center. closer might be better depending on what you plan to use for decking. I will be using 1.5 inch rough cut oak actually 1.5 inches thick. I had to do a little "tweaking" with the stringers as they warped and twisted as they dried. The only other suggestion would be to forget the 4x4's, because they may bow down at the outer ends! BTDT.
