hydraulic line diameter?

I am adding a belt driven 3gpm hydraulic pump to old tractor for 3-point. Any recommendations on diameter of lines? Does the pump intake require larger diameter lines? Is a given Inside Diameter (ID) of steel brake line the same as the ID of steel "hydraulic" line and the same as the ID of hydraulic hose? Any advantages to using steel where possible, or just doing it all with hose? Are there any references on the web for this kind of information?
