That shouldn't happen. The oil pump has a pressure release built into it. If that malfunctions, it will blow the seals. If you put too much oil in a crankcase, it can lead to foaming the oil and less oil going to where it is needed. But I would have to think that it would take a lot more than 1/2 a quart to screw anything up. I have had older engines that used oil - leaking, and put an extra quart in, never had a problem. Depending on the size of the oil pan, and extra 1/2 quart will only raise the level in the pan 1/2 inch at most.
