Those were originally Positive ground you know?? If its hooked up otherwise and you started it and the genny wasnt polarized same as battery you can damage a Voltage Regulator !!!!!!!! Id hook her up with battery Positive ground and Polarize the genny n then start her n see what happens (in case you havent already done it right that is)
A good working 6 volt genny should raise the battery voltage from its 6.3 volts sitting there to the 6.5 to 7 volts and a lil over range if shes charging. HOWEVER the open unloaded output of the genny dont tell you all that much, its what it can raise the batetry voltage to once coupled to it via the cutout relay inside the VR that matters. If shes not charging enough to pull the cutout relay in closed the voltage on its ARM to case represents the genny only NOT the battery voltage. (run my procedure to test the VR and cutout relay etc)
Working through my Troubleshooting Procedure, especially Para 5 where it tells how to see if its a genny or a VR problem and how to try dead grounding the field to see if that makes her charge or not ought to help you find the problem.......

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
