Dave, The one thing that comes to mind here is closed center valve vs open center valve. Your tractor likely has an open center system and that return might be for the flow of oil that must be allowed. If it is a closed center valve it will not work with an open center system without what is usually some adapter plug or plate on one end of the valve stack. Kind of wordy but perhaps some help! Andy
