i grow the small 'sugar baby' watermelons. just about 6-8 lbs and very sweet. anyway, as far the turning black, i don't know. i have had that happen also. it could be a melon blight. i just prune off the dying/dead melon. after the melon plant is up, water and fertilize and then when the melon is growing, another good watering and fertilizing with a manure tea mix or water soluable fertilizer. try to keep the water off the leaves, if possible.
