A Dodge-you have got to be kidding! Just joking--they are all good or wouldn't be in business. Do you really want to shift all those gears? I just got rid of 1984 Chevy 3/4 ton big block with 4 speed (3 speed with granny low) and swore no more manual transmissions. It couldn't keep up with the standard Dodge-Cummins let alone a new and improved version. Any Dodge-Cummins diesel will be capable of pulling the barn down so I probably wouldn't bother with the extra cost. On the other hand what is $900 on a $35000 truck? I have a 1997 Chevy 1500 4X4 with a Vortec 305. It has about 220 hp (I think) automatic trans and 3.73 gear ratio. I have pulled 12000 lbs and it does just fine in flatlands of Central IN. Hills and mountains would be a different story though. The dealer should be able to tell you gear ratios. That is basic info. Maybe you should try another dealer. One more thing--I am no Dodge man but have heard stay away from automatic transmission on Dodge diesel. Can't stand up to the torque. I forgot. I assume it is Cummins powered. I heard the Cummins was going to be history soon.
