In the Old Days some would paint both sides of a conventional head gasket with aluminum spray paint, let it dry and then install it. The head and block gasket surfaces want to be a little rough to help hold the gasket. They also should be straight (not warped). Some shop manuals claimed you should not be able to pull a .003 feeler gage from under a straight edge laid along the length of the surface.
