Machine to cut a trail around mountain ridges

I have a spring on my property that is about 1/2 mile away from my storage tank. The area is mountainous. From 1870 - 1950, a pipeline existed to carry the water to my tank. The pipe has not been used for 50 years and is rusted and washed out in places. It hugged the ridgelines and had enough fall to work without pumping. The original trail/pipe line was hand dug. What kind of power machine/tractor can handle this job? The ridgeline is too steep for a riding machine.
