Mark, follow Salmoneyes suggestions, with one addition. If the ground cable is not connected to a starter mounting bolt, move it there. Not real familiar with Fords, but can tell you that putting the heavy ground cable as close to the starter as possible is the best way. Much less resistance that way. An 8 volt battery was a cure-all at one time. In the short run, it would make a new vehicle out of what you had, but then the points burn and the lights burn. Also be sure your starter armature and brushes are nice and clean, and bright, no dirt or rust, have found mud dabber nests in starters that still worked! John
