There's a little more to the story in this article. It doesn't give all the facts, but it sure seems to me like he wasn't taking proper responsibility for his animals.
If I was his neighbor, I would have probably took the cattle to the sales barn after a few weeks if they were on my property and I couldn't contact the owner through due diligence. As wild as those animals were reported to be, I may have put up a fuss over how we split up the check as well.
Also, the 3-day jail time was for not appearing in court.
