The Auto Recyclers Assn site (a-r-a.org) has a Q&A section; bottom of pg 5 has: "...NHTSA requires...crush or shred...including the engine block and the drive train (unless, with respect to the drive train, the transmission, drive shaft and rear end are sold separately)..." (Obviously written by someone who forgot front wheel drive or didn"t know anything about it). Presumably that"d be the present requirement, but the site may not be up to date. My understanding is that alternators, etc, can be and are being stripped before crushing.
