GENE: About your alternator question.

Your use of a Japanese alternator in place of the Delco SI will work just fine. My article about these internal alternators (see Article Archives - "Upgrading Your Tractor's Charging System") called out the Delco because it is readily available but I used a Datsun alternator on my Massey Ferguson 2135 for the same reasons you listed. (size and output) They all basically use the same 3 terminals. One big lug for output to the battery and two tabs. One tab is a field exciter and basically turns the alternator on and off. The other is a sense line and only used when you have a long feed line to the battery. Determining which tab is which is also easy. After you have the alternator attached and running with the output lug connected to the battery, touch each of the two tabs (with a wire) to the output lug. The sense line is very high impedence and will not spark when you touch it to the output lug. The exciter tab is lower impedence and will give a small spark when you touch it to power. You should also hear the load increase as the alternator kicks in to operation and begins to operate. Tie the sense line to the output lug and don't operate your alternator without it. If the sense line is open, the alternator will not be able to "sense" the right voltage and will run too high of a voltage and could hurt your electrical system. I ran the exciter tab to my ignition switch with no problem but I understand some applications use a diode and attach this line to the oil sending unit. E-mail me if you need any more information.
