On finding cracked engine blocks, If a radiator leaked, often straight water would be used during the tillage season, antifreeze was expensive from a farmers opinion, especially if it leaked out on the ground! The old tractors, people here are looking for, got relegated to the fence rows and groves when they wore out. Too bad the radiators were split wide open at frost along with the blocks, but so what, they weren't worth nothing. at the time. One has to keep the perspective from 40-50 years ago that the old iron was not worth the effort to keep it going let alone do maintenance on it. I've heard of people using 40 weight motor oil in the gear cases in extreme weather, I wouldn't suggest it for plowing snow, just for the light moving of things around the yard. In extreme cold the tractor wouldn't have been used enough to actually warm up the gear lube so it was working anyway. Has anyone tried one of those heavy magnetic heaters, the kind that are stuck on engine oil pans.?
