It can't hurt to store them in the warm. I know setting them on concrete will discharge them due to the change in temperature from the bottom to the top of the cells. A heavy chunk of iron could do the same thing I suppose.
I know in antiques we have much the same problems. If they don't get used on a regular basis the battery gets shared between them.
I have had great luck with optima batteries. Have one in my WD45 and its been in there for 7-8 years still works fine but the tractor gets used often too. Had another in my old pickup and it was 9 years old when I sold it so I would say they are worth the extra price.
Lawnmower batteries have been good to me too. Thing sits in the shed all winter no charger and this was the first year I had to jump it in the spring. Thought that was good for a 7 year old battery. I bet next year it will be done.
I have never used a float or trickle charger on any batteries. Not saying its a bad idea I have just had good luck with batteries.
