I call it courtesy, and it's lost concept for the most part, I'm afraid.
A few of us still cling to it.
SiL borrowed the pressure washer to clean down his house in prep for painting. Had it for two weeks (I had to go get it). He didn't break anything but I've never seen anything so filthy as he left it.
Flip side is my neighbor and me. He has the bigger and better workspace (heated is a big part of that) so I'll ask to use it now and then. His tools are cleaned and put away when I'm done. Any consumables or tools broken or damaged are replaced, and the floor is swept up and cleaner than I found it when I'm done. I put 50 gallons into the fuel tank for his garage every fall. He will occasionally borrow tools from me and they are returned timely and clean. On the occasions that he needs tools that I have and it's easier to work in my garage, he is as courteous as I am in his.
I figure we're both lucky, 'cause most folks don't operate like that anymore.
