I've got two 10 foot gates with a post in the center. One gate is for the drive way and the other is a walk through gate. I sometimes (once every 2 years or so) pull the center post to give a 20 foot opening for a large truck to enter easily. This is currently a gravel drive and the center post is just stuck in the ground about a foot. Still it tough to pull up. Now I'm paving the drive and they are going to pave all the way around the post. They're paving only a couple of feet wide under the walk gate, the rest will be mulch. I'm wondering if it will still be possible to pull the post up or if now is the time to find a sleeve to put in the ground and drop the post in. Any recommendations or comments. How much larger should the sleeve be than the post? My post is 2 3/8 diameter. Should I use a steel sleeve or plastic? Just wondering if anyone had experiences with this I should know about.
