Hi Rick, The most important is a even finish on both valve face and seat, no high low spots, and don't put grinding compound on the valve stem as that will wear the valve guides but do use a light coating of oil on the stems while lapping and a little oil in the valve grinding compound. Clean all the grinding compound off really well, then use a white assembley grease on the valve stems when done.
