Seems you've got to figure out if it's a mechanical knock (from something loose), or a diesel-timing knock. The BD-144 and BD-154 engines will knock a lot when ignition timing starts running too advancd. With the CAV rotary pump, easiest remedy is just to loosen the pump mount and back it off a few degrees. Keep in mind that one degree of pump movement equats two degree at the engine. When the early engines used CAV inline pumps instead of rotaries, the instruction manuals give as timing recommendations as follows: Advance timing for more power if excess noise is acceptable. "For less knocking, retard timing, if less power is acceptable." I've got a 3414 that knocks like crazy unless I put a load on it. I pulled the pan and all is tight, so I don't worry about it - since with mine, it's a diesel knock.
