Kinda punting here,but sounds as though your starter system is pretty much "self contained" ie mechanically activates starter,whether ingition is on or off.If so then you need to tap +power from +post or from hot side of starter connection for igniton-coil. Diode you have should work,as long as voltage is correct,amp rating indictes it will handle more than needed w/o failure.Sorry I can't be of more help,but having trouble visualising your system...more familiar w/Fords.I know of a guy who is into cockshutts on another board.If I can find him I'll refer him here.
