Nope, I think even they realize the clunker program was the most nonsensical thing that's come out of Washington recently. Took a lot of good vehicles off the road and had NO measurable impact on gas mileage OR emissions. Even the automakers admit that most of the sales were pulled ahead out of future purchases.
The thing about government spending these days is that it doesn't have to make economic sense. If the government spends 1, 2 or even 10 billion, you and I as taxpayers don't feel any different the next morning. It didn't hurt a bit.
But if you're one of those people who benefitted from that spending, then hooray for Washington! It's the old "chicken in every pot" promise to get elected.
All that's changed is the "special interest" lobbying groups getting the dollars nowadays are the unions and social welfare organizations instead of corporations.
For example, the UAW has lobbied for $10 billion to be put in the health care reform bill to cover health care costs for Union members who retired early (age 54-62). How many of you guys are like me, still working at 59 or over 60 and don't have the luxury of sitting on our behinds for the last 10 years? And now, when it looks like their VEBA may run out of money they want you and me to guarantee that their health care will be paid until they reach Medicare age. Downright disgusting.
