That tractor was originally Positive ground ya know, hows it connected now??? If the battery got reversed the ammeter will register bass ackwards which an ammeter wire swap side to side would cure as Rav was talkin about. The genny can still charge at EITHER Pos or Neg ground polarity if its Polarized, but if its a Voltage Regualtor system and was ran reverse polarity the VR may be damaged.
If it were mine Id install the battery at Pos ground (if not already),,,,,,,,Polarize the Genny (regardless),,,,,,,fire her up n say a few prayers n see what happens. The coil polarity (unless its a mag) needs to match the battery, for Pos ground its lil - wires to switch and its + to distributor, opposite that for Neg ground
