If you turned your lights on with the engine running then disconnected your battery all the lights would have burned out if your generator was charging.
When you disconnect your battery the voltage regulator senses a high resistance in the charging circuit and it will tell the generator to charge full force. I know I've done this before and it blew out all the lights. The charging circuit needs the battery or some sort of load to sense so it can tell the generator what rate to charge. Once the battery is disconnected the generator will try to overcome the high resistance, a generator has no limitation on how many volts it can put out.
Your generator is not charging if the lights did not burn out.
