Great engine but hard to get parts for. I have several in S10s and Isuzu PUP 4WD trucks. Isuzu built the 1.8 and 2.2 diesels used in small cars and trucks from existing gas engines. Subquently, parts are scarce. Don't confuse them with similar looking small Isuzus used in Thermoking reefers, etc.
I don't believe some of the fuel mileage figures Ive heard. They seem a bit exagerated to me.
My S10 2WD diesel has never gotten better then 36 MPG and 32-34 is more the usual. My 2.2 diesel Isuzu 4WD mini-truck gets 27 MPG at best, but it does not have overdrive. If it DID have overdrive, I doubt I'd get much chance to use it. Too many hills here and too little power.
I have two 1981 Chevy Chevette diesels. Both have the smaller Isuzu 1.8 liter engines, and they both get, on average, 45 MPG on highway runs. Since they are small, light, and have overdrive, I can't figure how an S10 truck is going to do as good or better.
And yes, as others have stated, a 2.2 only makes the power of a 1.6 or 1.8 liter gas engine, so don't expect much power.

After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
