This is from an old post. As a controversy erupted from the posting on charging a 8 volt battery, I e mailed the question to a prominent battery charger manufacturer asking how to charge a 8 volt battery with an auto type battery charger. The response is summarized as follows. Use a variable current charger that has a 10 amp rating. Using the 12 volt switch position it may be used to charge 8 volt batteries. The charge current is not to exceed 10 amps or it will overcharge the battery. Used in this manner it can charge any lead acid auto type battery whose voltage is less than 6 or 12 volts (such as a single cell of 2 volts. It is suggested that a digital voltmeter be attached to the battery to monitor the progress of the charge. Stop charging when the voltage reaches about 9.6 volts on the 8 volt battery. That's about 2.4 volts per cell if charging other batteries that have a different number of cells. This is an average stopping point, the battery manufacturer may recommend slighly higher or lower. I did not post the response itself as I did not request permission to do so and feel it would be improper without permission.
