I've never been in the business, but let me offer a couple of observations:
First, the internet is ripping a hole through the insurance industry. Like so many other businesses, there will be some agents that will adapt and survive, but many won't. I don't think I'd want to start out in the insurance business right now.
Second, people are starting to get wise to whole life insurance, which used to be a cash cow for agents. You're going to have to depend on selling a lot of policies that don't have such huge sales commissions. If this recruiter is trying to sign you up to sell whole life, I'd walk away now. I think your best bet would be to try to specialize in an area you're familiar with, e.g. commercial building policies.
