When I worked at the Ford dealership in parts, our transmission guy referred to these transmissions as the "E-4-OH NO!" When I worked at Jasper Engines disassembling E4OD's to be rebuilt, the cores we started with were usually pretty crappy inside...there's a separate solenoid block that unbolts from the valve body on them.
But yours sounds like a simple problem with the VSS. Replace the speed sensor and you should be OK...because the speed sensor not only operates the electronic speedo, but also helps "find" your shift points.
