My B-I-L has a '92 F150 4X4 that does the same thing, ONCE IN A WHILE.
He shuts it down, smacks the dash above the instrument cluster, starts it up and goes on his way.
The VSS is down on the tranny (2WD) or transfer case (4WD), so his problem is other than the VSS.
I haven't dug into it to see if the VSS signal goes the the gauge cluster, then on to the powertrain control module, but I'm wondering if that may not be the case.
ANYHOW, while the VSS (or wiring associated with it) may well be YOUR problem it's possible your problem MIGHT be like his, in the dashboard area.
