I still have my Dad's last tractor and use it all the time. It isn't a beauty, but it works fairly well and I have tinkered with it for a long time and KNOW it pretty well. I like and enjoy it, probably partly because it reminds me of my Dad, who died 15 years ago.
On the other hand, I have always said that all my possessions are for sale all the time, for the right price. But my Dad's old tractor would be VERY expensive to buy, at least at this time in my life. If someone was willing to pay, say $10K for what is probably worth $3K to $4K, I would probably sell it and buy a lot better tractor to replace it. When I am too old to use it any more, my guess is that the price would come down to a more realistic number.
If the owner does not want to sell it now, or wants a much larger price than you will pay for it, don't do or say something that will make him mad at you. Take a few photos of the tractor, if he will allow it, and then leave your name, address and phone number with the owner. There might be a time when he is willing to let the tractor go. Or that time may never come--maybe he has children who have grown up on that tractor and will want it when their Dad no longer does.
My Dad was very pleased when I wanted his tractor when he left the farm. I know he liked to hear about how I was enjoying it after I bought it, and all the things I used it for and what I had to repair or figure out. But I don't think he ever even got back up on it after I got it.
If the current owner of the tractor is not interested in selling it at this time, you might consider trying to find a similar tractor somewhere else. Old machinery is addictive. You never get enough! And then if the tractor you want becomes available, you will know all about working on that model. It seems like there is always something to do. Good luck!

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
