I think the first criteria is if the company is still in business. Second an older tractor is probably the best for the small land owner. The reason is that back in the 40 and 50's farmers didn't have much money and needed reliability as well as easy home servicing. Realizing this, most of the manufacturers of that time didn't make lemons, and most of them are reliable and heavy, another must. Remember that these small machines had to handle 100 acres on average. Another is gearing, you want to get to very low speed in a hard pull, so the more gears you have to play with the better, easier on the tractor too. What comes to mind is the old favourite the Ford 8N,9N,2N and the super dexra diesel which commands big bucks at restorers auctions. They come in 3 or 4 speed I believe. Forget the 3 speed. You know about the PTO and 3PH so thats a plus also. I have a MH30 with 5 speed and 3PH, but I was looking for a Ford but couldn't find one cheap. I'm satisfied with the MH and can still get parts. My 2 cents. options, although everything else is fine. as the high rev, aluminum jobs today
