hydraulic systems that are only hydraulic, usually have a fine filter on the return line to the sump. in these systems the reservuar and the oil in it are always clean and more sophisticated pumps (like piston pumps) may be used.
in systems that combine hydraulics with transmission, however the oil can be contaminated ny transmission particles, so it's better to intall a suction screen (the bigger the better),that will protect the gear pump from the larger particles, and a pressuere line filter to protect the rest of the hydraulic system.
