It ain't about the payroll. Yeah, they're a rich team, in a rich market with a driven family ownership willing to spend the money.
They pay a huge luxury tax on their payroll. This year it was almost $27 million, all of which goe to augment payroll for other teams. The only other team to hit the trigger and pay that tax this year was Detroit and the only other teams to have paid the tax ever are the Rd Sox and the Angels. And over the six years that the tax has been in place, NYY have put in almost $150 million, nearly ten times the total of the other three teams combined. But they['ve spent that kind of money for the last nine years and no title show for it, so I jus't can't buy that it's about the payroll.
New York has always been that kind of market. Look at the old battles in the 40s and 50s. Giants, Dodgers and Yankees, always in there. It ain't the money, it's the kind of talent Cashman and Co. can put together with it, and a manager who can shape them into a team. Twins and the Phillies were no pushovers. They are tough teams and they got beat by another tough team.
