No, it's not an Isuzu engine. It's from the same inline engine family as the straight six in the Trailblazer and the four cylinder also used in the Colorado/Canyon.
Much of the truck design WAS done by Isuzu. I'm told by a friend in GM Powertrain (who worked on the program) that the five cylinder version was developed after several design decisions were made that precluded installing a six cylinder engine in the vehicle. (There's no market for six cylinder light trucks in Japan.) Since the four cylinder engine wasn't going to meet the needs of the US market, GM went on a crash program to develop the five banger.
