I put an upstairs addition on an older home 15 years ago. That addition had 24' long engineered floor trusses, they worked well and spaned the width of the house--24' (real nice) But.....those engineered trusses cost double of 2x12s.
Engineered floor trusses are needed where there is no center footing under the foundation of a home. (like my old house)
In my home that I built 10 years ago I used 2x12s 16" OC. I had 175 2x12s for the floor 16 feet long. (the cost of engineered floor trusses would have added $3-4 thousand to the lumber package.) Engineered trusses have their place.
