I haven"t done much away from home in close to a year, but know more is coming up when the economy straightens out. Even then going out of town I was always home every weekend. The main thing I found to make it work was good communicsation between me and my wife.To aid in this it"s nice to have a good cell phone plan with no long distance charges, and a home phone plan with unlimited long distance for a set price, or something like that. One place I worked I had no cell service at the motel but did at the job site. When possible I always called and let my wife know when I left the job and headed to the motel or barring that she always knew I"d be in the room after a certain time so she could just call the hotel.
As a part of all of that I usually tried to make sure I was at the motel and able to call or be called before my little girl went to bed so I could talk to her and at least tell her good night.
Beyond that I don"t really know any real secrets to making it work. If you have the needed trust and communication between you and your wife, and continued communication with the kids.....and they can all understand what your doing is necessary and even more so for them, then you shouldn"t have any problems.
