We had an old Fairbanks-Morse 1 cyl diesel engine in a dyno lab in college. Tried running it on a bunch of different fuels - Wesson Oil, peanut oil, safflour oil, lard oil and others I cannot recall. The diesel ran fine on all the oils, though some developed less power than others. A side discovery was some strange-smelling exhausts - when running on lard it smelled like a McDonald's kitchen exhaust...
