Foaming hydraulic fluid is usually caused by one of three things:
1 Fluid with too high of a viscosity,
2 Poor quality fluid,
3 Air getting drawn into the suction side of the system due to an air leak that can be so small that fluid won"t leak out of it.
I"ve worked with many top reservoir return systems and I"ve never seen that cause foaming, if a low enough viscosity fluid is used. If you check all the connection, clamps, and hoses on the suction side of your system and are sure you don"t have any leaks, you might want to try a lower viscosity fluid, such as John Deere Low Viscosity Hy Gard. It is about equivalent to an SAE 15.
Another thing you might want to check if you haven"t already is the suction screen or filter. I worked on a combine once that was foaming the fluid, and all I could find wrong was that the suction screen in the reservoir was almost completely plugged with some kind of slimy gook, like some incompatible fluid had been added at some point. I cleaned it, changed the fluid, and the problem went away.
