Its all about volume, just like in milk or the other commodities. Those of us who run a 'one man band' need a certain volume. Larger operations with leased equipment, a dozen employees, and purchasing truck load lots of supplies cover a lot more acres in a day and can operated on lower margins. One of my neighbors told me he has to add 200 acres a year just to keep cashflow going. Eventually I see that as a train wreck waiting to happen.
