GM did make some awful stuff during the time of the Oldsmobile diesels. They made some some pretty bad gas engines around then, also. But, there were many great diesel cars around before that never sold well. Volkswagen, Peugot, Volvo, Mercedes, Isuzu, etc. They were always odd-ball cars driven by odd-ball people and never became main-stream.
My 82 actually got 26 MPG when the old man drove it in Long Island, New York. He was an old skin-flint and kept a log of every drop of fuel he ever bought. He probably did that well because he was near sea level and there are no hills there. I bet he never went over 55 MPH either.
Here in NY it gets a consistent 24 MPG on highway runs and averages 17 MPG on mixed driving.
1982 6.2 engine, 4WD, 3.08 axles and four speed manual trans with overdrive. Trans is not very common. NP833. Chrysler also used it. I have two 6.2s that have it.
My 1983 diesel Blazer with 3.08 axles and TH400 auto gets a best around 20 MPG at 65 MPH.
My 1986 diesel Blazer with 3.08 axles and 700R4 (overdrive auto) gets 21 MPG.
My 1991 1/2 ton 4WD diesel Suburban has 3.42 axles and the 700R4 trans. It gets 21 MPG on highway trips.
My 1987 3/4 ton 4WD diesel Suburban with the J-code 6.2 got the worst. 3.73 axles and TH400 trans. Here in NY it got a best of 18 MPG and 13 MPG "around town." It did last to 520,00 miles though and did a lot of towing. My son took it to Colorado with a 2nd engine installed. Mileage dropped to 15 MPG due to the high elevation over 5000 feet. So, he had to install a turbo just to get the power and fuel mileage back, and also . . . he could not pass the Colorado smoke inspection without the turbo. Too high up in the clouds.

Today's Featured Article - Product Review: Black Tire Paint - by Staff. I have been fortunate in that two of my tractors have had rear tires that were in great shape when I bought the tractor. My model "H" even had the old style fronts with plenty of tread. My "L" fronts were mismatched Sears Guardsman snow tires, which I promptly tossed. Well, although these tires were in good shape as far as tread was concerned, they looked real sad. All were flat, but new tubes fixed that. In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on
