I worked on Rolls-Royce cars for a number of years, mostly pre WW II. These early cars did have factory horsepower ratings, and these ratings were also used to identify the vehicles vintage. The numbers went like this: 20HP, 20/25, 25/30, etc. 20/25 meant the 20HP design with an additional 5 horsepower. However, these were not dyno horsepower, but "taxable" horsepower, which was derived from a formula used for taxation purposes. In England, and some other countries, taxes were paid essentially on the size of your engine. A side note, most people don't realize that for many years Rolls-Royce made a large chassis and a smaller less powerful chassis. And when I say chassis, that's all Rolls-Royce sold you until I believe the 1950's. Prior to then custom body builders designed and crafted a hand made body for each car. As to real dyno horsepower, if Rolls-Royce has ever published these figures, it has only been within recent years.
