I had a Basset named Charlie. I cut this poem out of a newspaper many years ago. It's by Alice E. Chase. Well worth the read. "To Charlie With Love" He's never won a ribbon and you'll never see his name, recorded in the annals Of the canine hall of fame. He hasn't any papers To show his family tree Charlie has to make it Without a pedigree But unlike lots of people Always trying to impress This lack of status symbol Coulkn't bother Charlie less With wagging tail and joyous bark he takes such things in stride, He knows whatg really matters Is what you're like inside And underneath that shaggy coat His heart beats strong and true He's full of love and loyalty What's more--he proves it too He's gentle and he's mannerly And he's made friends galore But stands his guard if strangers Come knocking at the door He's ecstatic when we give him A kindly word or pat He's wonderful with children, Even patient with the cat. No, he's never won a ribbon But of all the dogs we know Within our family circle Charlie places best in show. I know it's kinda long but I hope you enjoyed it. rw
