Matt, I'm not sure I'm that old a timer, but yes, modern paints are definitely glossier than the old enamels. Most people like to "over restore" so it's not that big an issue. You can flatten modern paint to make it look "old". There are both chemical and non-chemical flattening agents. Both are tricky as a little bit seems to do nothing, then a little bit more can be too much. Some experimenting will be needed to get the look you want with the particular paint you are using. Polyurethane paint is the trickiest to flatten. Unfortunately all flatteners reduce the durability on the paint. Unless your tractor will be a garage kept showpiece, I recommend painting normally, then finishing with a flattened clear coat. That way the tractor is protected, and if the clear eventually fails you don't have to strip everything off and start over. Finally, flattened paint will look "blotchy" if applied unevenly, or too heavy. Before starting on your own parts, I recommend getting all your loaned out tools back, then practicing on items belonging to your friends and neighbors. Good luck....Al English

My dad dreamed that some day he would have his own tractor with every implement he could get. When he rea
