if the rod is straight and not pitted ie the chrome is good, it's mostly just a matter of replacing a whole bunch of o-rings. i did one last summer: took it all apart, brought all the old o-rings to the local mechanic, and he matched them up. the only thing he didn't have on the shelf was the felt wiper where the rod goes into the cylinder, but we made something work.
