Good post Dr. Burrhead! I vaguely remember the military doing the sodium silicate trick. Best bet is do a proper weld or braze repair and be done with it. But, a temporary fix trick is to bring the thing up to operating temperature and have the coolant circulating, then dump in a small bottle of ginger powder from the grocery store and keep it circulating. This is not for a pressurized cooling system... The ginger powder will seep into the crack and swell and form sort of a scab as it comes thru and dries on the outside. This trick was taught me by an old timer when I was a kid. A variation of it is also told in my Granddad's 1914 Model T Ford owner manual. If the crack is into the combustion chamber or you gotta have a pressurized cooling system forget it and head for a competent cast iron repair shop. "Put a can of ginger powder in it kid!" I still remember that advise given me about 45 years ago. It worked too. Good luck and hope you don't need it, IHank
