Lowly said: (quoted from post at 08:50:13 12/19/09) As a follow up to a thread on engine heaters at the crawler forum I have a question.
I have always heard two schools of thought on how to use a tank type engine heater on a tractor that you use every day. One school says to plug it in right after you shut down for the day, that way you use the engine heat so that the heater only has to maintain temperature overnight. The other school says to plug it in an hour before you need to start the tractor. Has anyone actually experimented to see which uses less electricity?
The initial idea was likely a large engine with a weenie little 300W block heater in extreme cold and wind. Yes plugging the heating in while the engine is hot is required. or the engine will never warm enough to start.
A 750/1000/1500tank heater will heat most engines warm to the touch in 30 minutes to 2 hrs. If parked in a shed and sheltered.
A 300W block heater for 10 hrs uses the same power as a 1000W heater in 3 hours.
So install both. A block heater for all night standby and a 1500w tank heater for short notice starts in 30-45 minutes.

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
