Ether is a powerful solvent that washes lube oil off the cylinder walls. If nothing else ring seal will deteriate with the rings & cylinders scuffing. There are the exotic failures caused by ether detonation such as broken rings/piston ring lands, pounded rod bearings etc. How many RPM does an accurate tach indicate starting RPM to be. A diesel relies on the universal gas law to operate. Squeeze the air enough & fast enough before the heat is absorbed by the surounding metal. Piston to cylinder wall seal leakage has to be low, valves perfect, cranking rpm fast enough & injectors spraying instead of dribbling. Even if perfect very few diesels will start without preheating or glow plugs below freezing temps.
