Brent: There are a lot of people who will tell you that the 1010 and 2010 are the worst tractors JD ever built. For detailed explanations go to: http//www.greenmagazineonline.com and their message board. Ask specifically for JR Hobbs or even Richard Haine. What I think they would tell you is that the engines for these two tractors use a unique sleeve arrangement where the individual cylinder sleeves are joined together with a common plate. This arrangement causes the parts to be sole sourced through Deere. Also getting them to seal or seat properly causes trouble. Another thing is that these tractors were built at Dubuque rather than Waterloo. The design was not as carefully thought out and there are a number of small things that cause difficulties. They can and have delivered good service to many people. Many more people have had service problems. The 2010 is probably a little better than the 1010. Going back to the design of these tractors, Deere put a great deal of effort into getting the Waterloo new generation tractors "right" at the time of introduction. Much less design time was available for the Dubuque tractors. There is a good account of the engine difficulties for these tractors in the Motorbooks book: JOHN DEERE NEW GENERATION TRACTORS. I would rather not do lengthy quotes from this source here but you may be able to get a public library copy which can further elaborate much better than I can. My best suggestion is to inquire on GREEN MAGAZINE's board and hear from someone who has really studied these tractors. My own personal experience is with a gas 2010 RU and it was not an outstanding tractor at all and spent a lot of time needing repairs. We used it for a loader tractor, with a JD #35 loader. Finally, my father decided enough was plenty and he bought a 2440/145 loader which solved the won't start, won't run, shop queen problems we had been having. The series which replaced the 1010 and 2010 have none of the problems associated with the 10 series. The 1020, 1520, and 2020 Dubuque built tractors are excellent! The row crop 2510, which is a 3020 with a 2020 engine is also excellent. The only reason to have a 1010 or 2010 is for a collection. Painted up and restored, even poor tractors can find a home. There are plenty of other brand tractors of equal disrepute and John Deere generally does not make bad products. I hope I do not sound over windy on the subject as I am mostly repeating what I have heard and read from other people. It is after all, an opinion. Regards JD70jim
